The 2013 Ukrainian Cup final, between league champions Shakhtar Donetsk and Chornomorets Odesa, takes place on (Wednesday) 22nd May at the Metalist stadium in Kharkiv.

Both sides are previous winners of the competition with Shakhtar winning 8 of their 12 final appearances, while Chornomorets have a 100% record from their two cup final appearances.

Shakhtar have stormed through to the final, scoring 14 goals in their 4 games including 4 in the demolition of Dynamo Kyiv in the first round ‘proper’ of the competition.  Chornomorets’ path has been much more competitive with tight games throughout the competition culminating in a come-back victory to be beat FC Dnipro in the semi-final.

The sides haven’t met in a cup final before however have met in three previous semi-finals with Shakhtar coming out on top in these three meetings.

Until securing the title, Shakhtar had been in ominous domestic form this season but have seemingly taken the foot off the peddle since securing the title, but having been able to rest players in the build up of the final, Shakhtar will surely be favourites to secure a hat-trick of Ukrainian Cup titles.

Chornomorets had also been in good form but have suffered in recent weeks.  At one stage Chornomorets coach Roman Hryhorchuk was contemplating breaking into Ukraine’s top 4, but they went on to fall away in the league.  They will however represent Ukraine in next seasons Europa League because Shakhtar, as league champions, will be in the Champions League.

The game in Kharkiv has caught the imagination of the public with around 37,000 tickets sold in the 40,000 seater arena.  Over 10,000 of these tickets have been sold directly to the fans of ‘The Miners’ where as ‘The Sailors’ have only officially sold 3,500 to their supporters.
